Despite remarkable breakthroughs in medical research and advancements in immunization and treatments during the 20th century, infectious diseases are undergoing a global resurgence. Newly emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases pose a threat that is no longer limited to the developing world. Factors including globalization, increased antimicrobial (drug) resistance, and climate and weather changes are contributing to the increased threat. A global approach will be needed to address this international health imperative. The 2009 Beckman Symposium brings together some of the world's foremost researchers and policy makers to discuss the identification, prevention, treatment, and cure of emerging infectious diseases. |
